I did a thing! I am now a CERTIFIED, Orton-Gillingham Tutor and I couldn’t be more thrilled to offer my support!

For those of you who have been following along – I originally started this blog as Mrs. Ray of Sunshine to connect with like-minded educators and share all things related to the Science of Reading.

Since then, I’ve been busy behind the scenes completing intensive coursework and a 100-hour supervised practicum to earn my Orton-Gillingham certification at the Associate level. After nearly two years of hard work and dedication, I’m proud to share that I am now officially certified by the Orton-Gillingham Academy as Emily Ray, OG/A!

What Does OG Associate Level Certification Mean?

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a structured, science-backed way to teach reading, writing, and spelling. It is especially helpful for students with dyslexia or other language-based learning differences who benefit from explicit, systematic instruction.

An Associate Level Certification means that a tutor has completed extensive training, including coursework, a supervised practicum, and a demonstration of the ability to deliver Orton-Gillingham instruction with fidelity. It shows that I’m qualified to provide individualized, one-on-one support using a method that is grounded in the Science of Reading and proven to help struggling readers succeed.

So… What’s Next?

After ten years in the classroom, I officially stepped away from teaching in 2023. The year before, I welcomed my daughter, Charlee, and took time off to reflect on my next steps.

Throughout my career and OG training, I’ve seen the power of structured literacy instruction. While many schools and teachers work incredibly hard, this kind of specialized, one-on-one reading support isn’t always widely available. And yet, some students truly need this approach to thrive.

That’s why I’ve chosen to focus fully on private literacy tutoring. I now offer one-on-one, Orton-Gillingham-based instruction to students who need a more personalized path to reading success. My goal is to meet learners where they are and support them with patience, expertise, and proven methods.

If you’re a parent seeking dyslexia tutoring, structured literacy support, or are simply curious whether OG tutoring might be right for your child, I’d love to connect.
