Why Passing the KPEERI Exam Matters for Families Looking for Dyslexia & Reading Support

I’m excited to share some good news! I recently passed the KPEERI exam (Knowledge and Practice Examination for Effective Reading Instruction) through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction.

This milestone means a lot to me personally, but even more importantly, it matters for the families searching for effective reading support, dyslexia tutoring, and Orton-Gillingham instruction.

What is the KPEERI?

The Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist (SLDS) certification from CERI is a national credential that validates an educator’s expertise in structured literacy and the science of reading. Earning this certification demonstrates that I understand how reading develops, the factors that can make reading difficult (including dyslexia), and how to provide evidence-based, individualized reading intervention to help struggling readers thrive.

Why I Chose to Take It

As a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor in Massachusetts, I believe in lifelong learning. Preparing for the KPEERI gave me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge of:

  • The five pillars of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension)
  • How to assess reading skills and adapt instruction for struggling readers
  • Multisensory, explicit, and systematic strategies proven to help students with dyslexia succeed

What This Means for Families

For parents, this certification is a reassurance that:

  • Your child is working with a certified reading tutor who specializes in dyslexia and struggling readers
  • Instruction is individualized, research-based, and Orton-Gillingham aligned
  • Lessons focus on building a strong foundation in phonics and literacy skills while boosting confidence

Gratitude and Next Steps

I’m so grateful to the families who trust me with their children’s reading journeys. Watching students make progress — and gain confidence in themselves as learners — is the best part of my work.

Passing the KPEERI is one more way I can bring the very best of structured literacy and Orton-Gillingham tutoring to my students.
